Ink Drawing of Bodhidharma

Kōgan Gengei (1748-1821) was a Rinzai Zen monk during the late Edo period. He was born in Echigo Province. It is said that he studied painting under Hakuin Ekaku and his disciple Suiō Genro. In Tenmei 4 (1784), he took up residence at Kōgenji Temple in Tamba and restored the temple, which had fallen into disrepair. He devoted himself to the preaching of the masses, and in particular, his lord, Oda Nobuyori, adored his virtues and took deep refuge in him.

The inscription ‘結果自然成’ is the fourth verse of a Dharma chant that Dharma composed when he transmitted the Dharma to the second patriarch, Hui-k’o. It means that the Dharma of Bodhidharma is passed down from generation to generation and comes to fruition spontaneously.
The full text of the Dharma transmission verse is ‘吾本来茲土　伝法救迷情　一花開五葉　結果自然成.’
