Fukurokuju (Fu Lu Shou), one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, is a Taoist deity from ancient China who believed that people would be happy only if they had the three elements of Fuku (prosperity of descendants), Roku (wealth), and Ju (longevity). Together with Jurōjin, another of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, he is considered to be an incarnation of the South Star. The South Star refers to Canopus, the first-magnitude star in the constellation Carina, which is difficult to see from China or Japan because it is so close to the horizon, and it was believed that if one could see this star, he or she would live a long life.

The inscription is mixed kana character, Japanese phonogram, which was Hakuin's specialty.
