Inlaid Armoire from the Bedroom of the Eisler-Terramare Apartment

Koloman Moser1903

Leopold Museum

Leopold Museum
Vienna, Austria

This magnificent armoire is part of the complete furnishings Koloman Moser conceived and designed for Gerta and Dr. Hans Eisler von Terramare’s Vienna residence. The piece is a perfect and superior example of the new lifestyle culture of the early twentieth century in Vienna. This piece of furniture clearly exemplifies Moser’s philosophy, according to which even everyday objects could become works of art by virtue of their artistic design in combination with the careful selection of high-quality materials and perfected workmanship. The inlayed female figures on this cabinet wear lilies of the valley in their hair, a reference to the favorite flower of the lady of the house.
