Mineral Garden Installation Image

This collaborative installation draws on the individual practices of Randy Lee Cutler and Andrew Rewald. The artists met through an introduction by NIRIN Artistic Director Brook Andrew and formed a collaboration based on their common interest in the natural world and ecological crises.

In Mineral Garden they create a portal into the hyper-terrestrial, presenting non-linear hybridised narratives and connections. Through a diverse selection of materials: collages, posters, archival objects, mineral and plant specimens, and a reading area, the installation traverses the realms of mysticism, museum taxonomy, science fiction and reality.

Cutler and Rewald invite a multiplicity of connections, relations, speculations, and readings that challenge normative categories and modes of engagement. Across three rooms that create different atmospheres, the project speculates on hidden and unexpected lives of plants, minerals, animals, and forms in-between, and seeks to reveal our interconnectedness with the elements that surround us or lie beneath our feet.
