Known for her delicate, detailed watercolors, often featuring fashionable women in beautiful settings, Madeleine Lemaire made her debut at the Salon in 1864. This watercolor depicts a young woman standing expectantly at the window of a well-appointed room. Henry Clay Frick reportedly told his daughter, Helen, that he purchased this in 1881, because it reminded him of Adelaide, his wife, whom he was courting at the time. One of three works at Clayton made by a female artist, the watercolor remains on view in Henry Clay Frick’s bedroom.
