Isaiah 34

This drawing was created after Meidner had already reached England and is based on a verse from the prophet Isaiah. “Their slain will be thrown out, their dead bodies will stink; the mountains will be soaked with their blood … the heavens will be rolled up like a scroll …” (Isaiah 34: 3–4) Meidner’s portrayal of the prophesied devastation is clearly informed by the initial reports of the systematic mass murder of European Jews.
