Elżbieta (Izabela) Lubomirska née Czartoryska (1736–1810), wife of Prince Stanisław Lubomirski, Grand
Marshal of the Crown, and owner of the palaces in Wilanów and Łańcut,
was the cousin of Stanisław August, and his childhood sweetheart. The
portrait painted by Krafft belonged to the gallery of likenesses of
ladies who were close to the King, which—chiefly painted by Marcello
Bacciarelli
—were hung in the king’s private rooms at the Łazienki Palace
(see cat. nos. 4, 7–10, 56 and 77–78): the Bedchamber and Study. The
likeness of Lubomirska was considered to be a pendant to the portrait of
Anna Teresa Potocka née Ossolińska by the same artist (see cat. no.
56). Both paintings were made in the same year, they have the same
dimensions and were always hung side by side.
The painting is a repetition of a portrait painted by Alexander
Roslin
in Paris in 1767, now in the Palace Museum at Wilanów. [See D.
Juszczak, H. Małachowicz, The Stanisław August Collection of Paintings at the Royal Łazienki. Catalogue, Royal Łazienki Museum, Warsaw 2016, no. 57, pp. 223–225.]
