Song Chang has long painted the landscape of division. He travels through borderline regions such as Paju, Yeoncheon, Pocheon and Cheorwon to paint the scenery that come under his historical awareness. To the artist, the tragedy of division in contemporary Korean history has always been an important topic, a persistent subject matter and eternal theme of his works. Farming Season of The Civilian Control Line (1986) is a landscape painting that shows civilian residents who live in the civilian control line area, a wartime operational territory, and soldiers who live there for a different purpose. The artist casts a message of awakening for the situation of the divided North and the South, which now feels almost ordinary. It is the artist’s warning against Korea’s remaining a divided nation.
