Balamand, Lebanon

An intricate 3-stepped framed structure, it is a large and free-standing cubical loom. Invented in 1804, it is named after its inventor Joseph Marie Jacquard, and is composed of the jacquard machine and loom on which it is equipped to facilitate the weaving process. Its function was to interweave yarn or threads into fabric. The weaving is done by intersecting the longitudinal threads, the warp, i.e. "that which is thrown across", with the transverse threads, the weft, i.e. "that which is woven".
