Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Quila or the Golden Fortress gets its name from the yellow sandstone that it is made of. It is the second oldest fort in Rajasthan, being built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal. Besides the massive gates and towers, the fort also encompasses the Royal Palace, several Hindu and Jain temples and numerous merchant-Havelis. It was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.
