Maiko wear hanakanzashi with different flowers each month. Including the hairpin associated with the Gion Festival, 13 types are needed in total. In addition, the various geisha districts hold dance meetings in the spring. These are the Miyako Odori (associated with the Gion Koubu district), the Gion Odori (Gion Higashi), the Kyo Odori (Miyagawacho), the Kamogawa Odori (Pontocho), and the Kitano Odori (Kamishichiken). For these meetings, hairpins with designs unique to each geisha district are made, as well as hairpins that suit that year’s performance, costumes or dancers.
January: Different designs are used each year. It seems that two or three types are often combined, such as winter chrysanthemum, pine, bamboo, Japanese apricot blossom, battledores, and bamboo grass.
