Migration Museum
Adelaide, Australia

This banner is part of the museum's Community Banners project, 'Memories and Dreams'. It is symbolic of Japanese immigrants' experiences in South Australia.
Mount Fuji, the sacred mountain of Japan dominates the banner. Surrounding it are images reflecting life in the old country. The pine tree is found in many Japanese gardens and is a symbol of long life. The bullet train epitomises modern Japan. The cherry blossom is the national flower and it evokes memories for Fusae Simpson, who helped make the banner. She says, ‘The cherry tree, the pride of Japan, breaks out into pink clouds of blossoms in April’.
