Jeong Misu’s Certification Document Issued by Bureau of Salve Administration in 1496

This writ records the confirmation of Jeong Misu’s ownership of slaves inherited from his aunt, who was the wife of Prince Yeongeung. His aunt, Lady Jeong from the Haeju Jeong family and wife of Great Prince of Chunseong, was abandoned by her husband and divorced at the time. After the loss of his parents, Jeong Misu grew up under special care and attention from his aunt, and this document describes his aunt’s special bequeathal of slaves to him under this special relationship. Jeong Misu received this document certifying his ownership of the inherited slaves from the Bureau of Slave Administration, which dealt with issues regarding slaves in Joseon.
