In 1982 Jim Henson and Frank Oz co-produced a fantasy feature film, "The Dark Crystal." Nominated for several awards, the film won a Saturn award for best fantasy from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. Noticeably darker than previous Henson projects, the film was partly overshadowed by the popularity of Steven Spielberg's "E.T." that same year. It still earned its share of devotees and fostered spin-off merchandise.
