Drawing instruments used by John Smith Murdoch, Chief Architect of the Commonwealth Department of Works and Railways.
A hinged maroon leather case with a silver plaque on the front engraved with "PRESENTED TO / John S Murdoch ARCHITECT / BY A FEW OF HIS FRIENDS ON THE OCCASION / OF HIS LEAVING ELGIN FOR INVERNESS / 13. NOVEMBER. 1881".
The case includes 16 mathematical instruments, 13 of which are stored within a blue, grosgrain moulded base, with the remainder secured by a pivot bar under the inside lid, which folds out upon opening. Two lead fragments are contained at the rear of the case.
