The original shackles and chains that hung from the rings on the second floor beams were part of the system in place to restrain male slaves on the upper floor of the pen; Male slaves were kept on the top floor, with no means to access the lower floor, chained to each other and to the central beam, because they were considered more likely to escape than females.
