John W. Anderson Slave Pen, outside from left

John W. Anderson died in 1834, ironically chasing a runaway slave. He is believed to have fallen from his horse, where he hit his head and died. The escaping slave was not recaputured, as far as is known. Anderson had four other slaves documented as escaped -- two in Natchez and two before arriving at the slave pen. Only the one Anderson was chasing at his death is known to have escaped from the slave pen itself.
