Royal College of Music
London, United Kingdom

This portrait of Joseph Haydn was painted during Haydn’s first London visit in 1790–91. It was probably commissioned by the music seller and publisher John Bland for marketing purposes. The portrait was subsequently engraved, also by Hardy, and Bland published it, ensuring it reached a wider audience. Even now it is one of the College’s most widely reproduced pictures and has become an iconic image of the composer.
