Adolf Eichmann developed the perfidious “marshal” system in Vienna that was later used in Berlin. The IKG had to provide people whose task it was to deliver the Jews marked for deportation to one of the four collection points in Vienna (Kleine Sperlgasse 2a, Castellezgasse 35, Miesbachgasse 8, and Malzgasse 7). The Jews themselves were quite deliberately made into scapegoats. In the cynical Nazi world they were the losers whatever they did. Walter Lindenbaum’s Couplet von den Rechercheuren is the desperate attempt of a person to understand his life in this hopeless predicament.
