The Kamaicha is the identity instrument of the Manganiyars. The instrument is made and played by the the community. The body of this ancient bow-and-strings instrument is made of mango-wood. This rare instrument is a specialty of the desert-culture of Barmer and Jaisalmer.

  • About the craft: Manganiyars are hereditary communities of traditional folk musicians living mostly in the Barmer and Jaisalmer districts of western Rajasthan. Their music has survived decades owing to the Jajmani system which is fundamental to their art form and also a source of livelihood. The repertoire of Manganiyar music covers qawwali, sufi songs, bhajans and songs on life cycle, rituals, festivals. The community's identity instrument is the Kamaicha.
