Kangaroo Island Settlers Banner

This banner was made by the Kangaroo Island Handspinner & Weavers Guild using coloured wool as their chosen craft fibre with some sections made from appliqued cotton fabric against a cream background.
The images on the banner represent the history, landscapes and lifestyle of Kangaroo Island, the first official British settlement in South Australia. The top section represents the early days, depicting the sailing ship, whale fin, seal and settler's cottage, in a wilderness setting which represents the early whalers and sealers. The top right hand corner displays gum leaves and blossom.
The centre section depicts a farm scene, house, sheds, paddocks, grain, livestock and windmill; this represents the dominant farming life of the Island. The lower section, depicts a lighthouse, dark cliffs, granite rocks, huge waves and beaches and represents the isolation of the Island from the mainland along with its rugged Island scenery.
The words 'Kangaroo Island' are embroidered across the bottom of the banner in black, entwined with correas.
