  • Title: Kanta Chandra Gupta (left) and her sister
  • Date: 1915
  • Story: In 1910, Kanta Chandra (second row, left) and her four siblings arrived in California. Shortly after, she applied for citizenship as a young, unmarried woman. At the time, the U.S. government did not favor the immigration of Asian women, granting citizenship only to women with U.S.-born or naturalized husbands. As a result, her application was denied. But she stayed, tirelessly petitioning for her right to be an American until 1969—when at the age of 73 she finally obtained citizenship.
