Karabitsu (Chinese Chest)

A Chinese style chest　made from plain cedar wood. It is called a karabitsu because it has legs. As with buildings and statues, the wood has been scientifically examined to date back to the Northern and Southern Courts Period (1369). Chests were typically used for ceremonial pieces or clothing, but ones made of plain wood were mainly used for storing important documents such as official papers.
