Sara Hennell (1812-1899) was an
author and artist. She became close friends with George Eliot in the 1840s and
moved to Coventry from London in 1851. This watercolour shows the ruins of
Kenilworth Castle in 1836, shrouded in shrubs and surrounded by other
vegetation. It demonstrates Hennell’s interest in how nature takes over
neglected historic buildings and other spaces.
