Kensington Gardens pleasure grounds and park was begun in the late 17th century. Most of the land that forms the park was formerly part of Hyde Park. Although associated with the royal residence of Kensington Palace, Kensington Gardens was open to the public on Sunday nights from 1733. By the early 19th century, it was open to the 'respectable' public every day.
