The artist highly valued painting historical scenes, and a significant number of his works was dedicated to the fates of the Polish nation. In this picture, Gerson recalled the figure of King Casimir I the Restorer (1016–1058), who returned from exile to Poland, at that time subjected to the anti-Christian rebellion of wealthy landowners, still attached to the old Slavonic pagan beliefs. The picture is an example of academic painting typical of Gerson.
