Chhau of Purulia mask for Kirat character, a transformation of god Shiva, from the Hindu religion, into a hunter in one of the episodes of the classic epic Mahabharata.
The use of masks in India is a very diverse tradition. They are used by dancers and actors, who incarnate gods and supernatural beings, in various popular theatrical genres and ritual performances. The inhabitants of Purulia, a city in West Bengal, have created Chhau, as the inhabitants of Purulia, a dance with masks and acrobatic movements that takes up stories of classical Indian epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana, and ancient ritual dances to provide hunting.
