The Greek historian Diodoro Siculo tells that, after the victory of Himera, the prisoners were employed, as well as for the construction of the great temples, also for the realization of important public works. In particular he reminds the network of underground aqueducts, called “Feaci”, and the large pool of Kolymbethra, in which flowed the waters of sources and brooks, and which became a fish-farm for the banquet. This great work has been identified between the sanctuary of the Chthonic Gods and the temple of Vulcan, in which flow eighteen underground culverts. Over time, it has become a large citrus garden, entrusted since 1999 to the Italian Fund for the Environment , in which are preserved citrus varieties that have disappeared and the different plants of Mediterranean Scrub.
