This robe has flowing water, cherry blossom, chrysanthemum, bush clover, and peony motifs woven into the ro, a summer fabric in which horizontal rows of plain weave alternate with rows of gauze weave. The gauze weave is cool, an effect reinforced by dyeing it a pale turquoise, for a refreshing summer garment. Near the hem, wave, chrysanthemum, peony, cherry blossom, and iris motifs have been reserved in white resist, to which embroidered flowers are added for a brilliant effect. Some of the rocks and flowers show the use of surihitta stencil dyeing to produce the fine dotted effect of kanako tie-dyeing. The gold thread with which some of the flowers, leaves, and waves, as well as the rocks washed by the waves, are embroidered is an effective accent for this design concentrated along the hem.
