The tradition of Christmas Cribs in Kraków, known in Polish as "Szopki krakowskie", is a unique and long-standing custom that combines the nativity scene with elements of Kraków’s architectural heritage. This tradition is unlike any other in the world and was officially recognized by UNESCO in 2018 as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Kraków Nativity Crib is a handcrafted, vividly colored, and intricately detailed nativity scene set within a structure inspired by the city’s iconic buildings. The designs often feature elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, especially motifs from St. Mary’s Basilica. At the heart of each szopka is the nativity scene with the Holy Family, but these creations also typically include a wide range of characters, such as shepherds, kings, and local folkloric figures like the Lajkonik or the Kraków trumpeter. Some cribs even incorporate contemporary or historical figures, blending the sacred with the secular in imaginative ways.

The tradition originated in the 19th century among Kraków’s craftsmen, particularly bricklayers and masons who created these elaborate scenes during the winter months to earn additional income. Initially used in street performances, the cribs gradually evolved into more elaborate and artistic works. Over time, they became more than religious displays and transformed into a form of folk art that reflected both faith and local culture.

Each year, on the first Thursday of December, artists and enthusiasts bring their szopki to Kraków’s Main Market Square and place them around the Adam Mickiewicz Monument. This event marks the beginning of the annual competition organized by the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków. A jury evaluates the entries and selects the best cribs in various categories. Many of these winning creations are then displayed in the Kraków Museum, which also holds a rich permanent collection of past szopki.

The Kraków Christmas crib tradition is deeply rooted in the city’s identity and serves as a vibrant expression of craftsmanship, folklore, and community spirit. It is passed down through generations, with families and schools often creating smaller versions of szopki together. Through this tradition, the city celebrates not only Christmas, but also its history, creativity, and enduring cultural pride.

This Christmas crib was powered by electric current, with five towers decorated in green, and additionally one small tower on each side, The crib won the third place in the Kraków Christmas crib competition in 1977.
