Based on the life of early 19th century Kannada army chief from Kittur, Sangolli Rayanna. V. S. Patil embodies the role of the warrior who actively revolted against the Colonial rule by mobilizing the people of his village to form an army that started using guerrilla warfare to fight the British. Rayanna put up a strong front in battle and was finally defeated by the British through treacherous means. The patriotic ideals that the film embodied, along with the sacrifices that Rayanna made for his country were so well appreciated that the film was recently remade on a grand scale.
