Nairobi, Kenya

An elder from the Kuria community. A council of elders was responsible for ensuring law and order, decision-making, ritual oath taking, religion, and administration. Traditionally, the elders presided over all issues concerning the Kuria community as a whole. The Kuria court system (council of elders) is still efficient and most conflicts are solved traditionally.

The Kuria belong to the Bantu linguistic group, and are closely related to the Abalogoli and Kisii communities. In Kenya they live in Migori county. They are divided into clans (ibiaro) with minor variations in laws, practices and language.
