Black and white postcard showing the richly decorated hall of the Kursaal, Harrogate (now known as the Royal Hall). The Kursaal (that is, a place for promenading as well as performances, found in spa towns), opened in 1903, designed by Robert J. Beale and Frank Matcham. It provided a meeting and promenading space for visitors taking the waters in the town, as well as being a centre for daytime and evening entertainments.
