Kyesan-dong Cathedral

LEE Insung(1912-1950) was a modern artist who usually treated watercolor painting as well. It was 17 years old when he won a prize of the 6th Joseon Fine Art Affair held by Japanese Government during colonial period. After this, he won a special recognition six times consecutively and became the recommended artist, which was the greatest honor for painters. This his representative watercolor painting using opaque colors is an important source for researching Korean modern watercolor paintings genre. He did not attach to realistic depiction rather expressed the impression of the object with his emotional sense. Viewers feel warm from the delicate variation of pastel toned colors. This work has important value in terms of the method for settling the Western painting style with his unique emotion in the period when Japanese academicism was transplanted ignorantly.
