La Fete de la Federation (The Festival of the Federation)

Length of printed cotton with scenes printed in red on white. In one scene, Louis XVI is shown taking the oath of loyalty at the Altar of Liberty while Marie Antoinette and the Dauphin pledge allegiance; Lafayette is in the background. In another scene people are dancing on the ruins of the Bastille. The fabric was designed after the fall of the Bastille (July 14, 1789) but before the beheading of Louis XVI (January 21, 1793) and is regarded as an attempt by Oberkampf to remain on good terms with both the Royalists and the Revolutionaries.
