Lace frill

Cité de la dentelle et de la mode

Cité de la dentelle et de la mode
Calais, France

"Point de neige", which appeared at the end of the 17th century, stems from the miniaturisation of "gros point". It is characterised by the virtuosic completion of an infinite number of tiny pins. Extremely difficult to make, therefore rare and expensive, it was particularly prized by the high clergy but also by the most fortunate nobles, foremost of whom was King Louis XIV. Here, the presence of an axis of symmetry suggests that it is a French and not Venetian creation, probably from a royal manufacturer.
