Caroline Price (née Carpenter) married the landscape gardener and author Sir Uvedale Price in 1774. Here, Reynolds has employed bold colours to unite the composition, while also drawing attention to finer details such as the outline of the button beneath the pale blue sash. Reynolds established a successful practice in London after training in Rome. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy, becoming its first president in 1768.
