Edwin Landseer began work on this painting in the 1840s, but he did not complete it until 1865. In March in the following year Queen Victoria saw it in his studio. The model was Madame Wharton (the stage name of Eliza Crowe), who played the role of Godiva in the 1848 Godiva Procession in Coventry.
