Writings lead us to believe that this altar piece hung in the Petrus- en Pauluskapel in the St Janskerk in Den Bosch. Scorel developed some of his purplish blues by applying a layer of ultramarine to an opaque layer of pink. To date this layering technique has only been found in Italian painting. Scorel was probably first introduced to this technique in Raphael’s studio. He must have brought the bright blue ultramarine (lapis lazuli) back from Venice.
