Landscape (Monet's Water Garden at Giverny)

In 1893, ten years after moving to Giverny, Monet purchased an adjacent property with a small brook, which he enlarged into a pond for a Japanese-styled water garden—the subject of Butler’s painting.

Butler was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Paris to study art. He befriended Claude Monet in Giverny, and later married his stepdaughter, Suzanne Hoschedé. Butler’s chosen subjects were domestic scenes, landscapes, and still lifes rendered in an Impressionist—and at times Post-Impressionist—style.
