“Urban subject matter dominates this period of his work, and it will be a landscape of Rio de Janeiro [called Lapa] that will bring him the coveted foreign travel award at the 52nd National Fine Arts Salon – Modern Section in 1947. The landscapes from this period introduce a conceptual and formal synthesis of the intense practice begun in the mid 1930s. This period is the peak of his landscape painting, and the subject matter will have somewhat lesser development in the following years, which, after his study abroad, will be almost entirely concerned with still-life painting and variations on that theme.”
Paulo Gomes, Iberê e seu ateliê: as coisas, as pessoas e os lugares (Porto Alegre: Fundação Iberê Camargo, 2015), 157.
