Until the creation of the Portuguese Rugby Federation (FPR) on September 23, 1957, Rugby in Portugal was directed by the Lisbon Rugby Association (ARL) created in 1926. In July 1958, the ARL social body took office FPR. At this same time the Portuguese Rugby Championship was created.
