The Atemporality series are still lifes Coupland created by combining the symbols that inflitrate our everyday lives—such as the Facebook 'Like' thumb, the blue Twitter bird and the fox associated with the Mozilla Firefox browser—integrated with logos from years past. The wordmark from Cinzano, an Italian vermouth first introduced in 1757, and the masthead from Le Figaro, a daily French newspaper founded in 1826, are placed side-by-side with modern signs and symbols to create a hybrid image that is lost in time or, from all times.
At the core of Coupland's practice lies a fascination with popular culture. Not only does Coupland utilize the strategies of Pop Art by incorporating objects and images taken directly from everyday life, but he often passes these through the lens of new media. The result is a provocative synthesis of the common with the extraordinary, set in the here and now.
