Leander Lane was born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1955. His father, Leander Junior Lane, was born in 1933 on a homestead in a Black settlement north of Maidstone, Saskatchewan, to Leander Monk Lane and his wife, Lossie Barksdale. His great-grandfather, Julius Caesar Lane, was one of two scouts—the other being William Crawford—who traveled to Saskatchewan in October 1909 to investigate the land the Canadian government was offering for homesteading. After filing their claim north of Maidstone, they returned to Oklahoma and in March 1910, Julius Caesar Lane helped lead twelve families from Oklahoma to Canada.
