Lei Feng was the most renowned individual elevated to hero status or model to follow. Although he was neither a war hero or martyr, Mao decided to turn him into a model of altruism and dedication, proclaiming him as good soldier and instructor of young pioneers, in 1963. Thus, Lei Feng became an instrument of propaganda.
