A Lei was a vessel for drinking wine, with a mouth smaller than a Zun (尊). The shoulders of this Lei are decorated with four standing birds and four ram's heads in high relief. The body of the piece is decorated with micro bas-relief animal heads and intaglio cloud and lightning patterns. The combination of high relief, bas relief, and intaglio lines is typical of bronzeware from the late Shang dynasty.
