The German prince Leopold of Saksen-Coburg took the oath on 21 July 1831 as the first king of Belgium after the Belgian secession from the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830. The Belgian revolutionaries excluded the house of Oranje-Nassau from the Belgian throne. Leopold would rule the new state of Belgium until his death in 1865
