The writer addresses this letter to one of her close friends, François Rollinat, and she pens it just a er returning from Majorca. The sojourn on the Spanish island brought Chopin and George Sand closer together. Also during that stay – despite the composer’s illness and the series of dramatic events linked to it – some of his most outstanding works were written. In her letter, she refers to Rollinat as Pylades, referring to ancient models of ideal and faithful friendship. Chopin and Sand maintained warm contacts with Rollinat, a neighbour of her Nohant estate.
