George Washington led the Continental Army as commander-in-chief during the American Revolutionary War. Two days after the British had taken Philadelphia - then the nation's capital - Washington sent this letter to fellow Major General Israel Putman. His text shows characteristic attentiveness and compassion--Washington demands additional troops "as soon as possible without injuring or harassing the men too much."
