Lewis was the eldest son and the 2nd child of Frederick and Anna Douglass. He volunteered and served in the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry regiment. Lewis was an outstanding soldier and was appointed sergeant major of the regiment, the highest rank available to colored soldiers at that time. He was with the 54h Massachusetts during their ill-fated assault on Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863. Lewis was wounded but soon recovered.
